5 Common LinkedIn Mistakes

So, you have a LinkedIn profile, and you use the platform a bit.

However, if you are like most people, you don't use the platform well, which means you might be missing out on lots of potential career opportunities!

So read on to see if you are making one of these 5 most common LinkedIn mistakes.

Common LinkedIn profile mistakes

Incomplete profile:

A complete LinkedIn profile is essential for making a good first impression on potential employers and clients, plus it will ensure you get found by recruiters! Make sure your profile includes a professional photo, a background image, a clear headline (not just the default current job title – add keywords), a summary/about section, and your work history and skills.

Ignoring the power of keywords:

LinkedIn search works based on keywords, and recruiters use keywords to find suitable candidates. Therefore, it's essential to include relevant keywords in your profile, especially in the headline and summary sections.

Not customizing your URL:

A customized LinkedIn URL (weblink) can help you look more professional, stand out and make it easier for potential employers or clients to find you. Plus, it looks much neater when you share the link in your resume or elsewhere.

Ignoring LinkedIn messages:

If you're not regularly checking your LinkedIn messages, you may be missing out on important job opportunities or networking connections. Respond to messages in a timely and professional manner. You can switch on messaging notifications in your settings if you don’t log in regularly.

Not engaging with others:

LinkedIn is meant to be a social network, so ideally you should be actively engaging with others. Follow industry leaders, like or comment on posts, and share relevant content to demonstrate your expertise and build your network.

By avoiding these common LinkedIn mistakes, you can make the most out of your LinkedIn profile and stand out to potential employers.

You might even find yourself headhunted by a recruiter!
